Helmuth Lent (June 13, 1918 – October 7, 1944) was one of Germany’s most successful night fighter aces during the Second World War.
Military Career:
- Joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 and rose rapidly through the ranks, reaching Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel); promoted to Oberst (Colonel) posthumously.
- Served in night fighter units, including Nachtjagdgeschwader 1, 2, and 3, eventually becoming a wing commander.
Combat Record:
- Flew over 500 combat missions (night fighter and heavy fighter sorties).
- Credited with 113 aerial victories, including:
- 105 night victories (one of the highest totals in history)
- 61 four-engine bombers
- Played a major role in defending Germany against Allied bombing raids.
Awards & Recognition:
- Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (1941), later awarded:
- Oak Leaves (1942)
- Swords (1943)
- Diamonds (1944) — one of the highest German decorations
- German Cross in Gold (1942)
- Multiple mentions in the Wehrmachtbericht (official military reports)
Death:
- Died in October 1944 in a flying accident near Paderborn.
- Buried with his crew in Stade.
