Wartime portrait photo & signature. 9x13cm. One of several portraits requested by a Hitler Jugend boy, and officially sent to him – see image of reverse.

Helmut Lent (June 13, 1918 – October 7, 1944) was one of Germany’s most successful night fighter aces during the Second World War.

Background & Career:

  • Born into a religious family; developed an early interest in gliding.
  • Joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 and initially flew the Messerschmitt Bf 110 with ZG 76.
  • Took part in early campaigns including Poland and Norway before transferring to Nachtjagdgeschwader 1, a night-fighter unit.

Combat Record:

  • Credited with 110 aerial victories, including:
    • 102 at night, making him one of the top night aces in history.
  • Achieved his first night victory in May 1941.
  • Became the first night fighter pilot to reach 100 night victories in June 1944.

Awards & Recognition:

  • Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross (1941)
  • Later awarded Oak Leaves, Swords, and Diamonds (1944) — one of Germany’s highest decorations

Death:

  • Died following a plane crash on October 7, 1944, after his Junkers Ju 88 struck power lines during landing.

Overall:
Lent was a pioneering and highly decorated night fighter ace, known for his record-breaking success against Allied bombers and his leadership in Germany’s night air defense.
