The following article (dated March 1943) describes why Feldwebel Kummer would be decorated with the Knight’s CrosS: “Feldwebel Gotthard Kummer, born on the 19.11.1908 in Grünhainichen (Gau Saxony), has particularly distinguished himself through his daring and bravery in the battles south of Lake Ladoga as a Zugführer in an East Prussian Grenadier-Regiment. In bitter close combat he threw back strong forces that had penetrated his sector of frontline. On the 11.03.1943 the Führer awarded him the Knight’s Cross.”
