During the fighting in Courland in mid-March 1945 the right neighbour of the 24. Infanterie-Division (19. lett.SS-Division) came under a heavy enemy attack while fighting in the forests north of the Molkerei (near Lielblidiene). A gap was torn in its frontline. As the regiment immediately adjacent to the sector of the SS-Division it feel to the Grenadier-Regiment 31 to close the gap. This it was able to do successfully. During this operation Hauptmann Simm repeatedly distinguished himself, and so was awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
