KAMPFGRUPPE BÜRG was formed on April 10, 1945, from the Sturmgeschützschule Burg near Magdeburg. Due to the rapid American advance to the Elbe, the supporting personnel and recruits there were equipped with infantry equipment and deployed to the east bank of the Elbe to repel the Americans. It fought in the BATTLE OF POTSDAM. The Kampfgruppe had a strength of 8,000 to 10,000 men. On April 20, 1945, the combat group was renamed Infantry Division Ferdinand von Schill – It was the last division established by the Third Reich and, with approximately 10,000 men, was the largest remaining division of the Wehrmacht at that time – and placed under the command of the 12th Army. Only the Schill 1st and 2nd Grenadier Regiments and the Fusilier Battalion were at their required strength. All other units were weaker and some never made it past the formation stage. Conrad would almost have certainly served in STURMGESCHUTZ BRIGADE 394, of this unit.
