Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
Melder, 7. Kompanie, III. Bataillon, Grenadier-Regiment 463, 263. Infanterie-Division, Heer
Awarded on: October 5th, 1944
On the 09.08.1944 Obergefreiter Binning received the order to comb through a forest with 6 men in order to clarify the situation in the area. While doing this he came across a very suitable position with a good field of fire. He thus decided to occupy it despite having no contact to the left or right, and thereafter he held this terrain against strong enemy pressure until a new Kompanie commander (Leutnant Wagner) took over the sector at around midday.
Through his prudent and determined action, Obergefreiter Binnig held off the Soviets long enough for his Bataillon to construct a continuous defensive line and master a critical situation. He would thus be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this action.
