Rare and historic original wartime government engraved Purple Heart grouping to to twin brothers that were killed in the tragic sinking of the Léopoldville by a German U-Boat
On December 24, 1944, Glenn and Jack were aboard SS Léopoldville, a troopship sailing from Southampton (England) to Cherbourg (France).
On board were more than 2 000 American soldiers from the 262nd and 264th Regiments, 66th Infantry Division. At exactly 5.54pm, SS Léopoldville was within five miles from the French coast when it was torpedoed by a German submarine.Badly damaged, the ship sank by the stern. Many soldiers were swept into the freezing waters and taken by the sea. Of the 2 235 American servicemen on board, approximately 515 are presumed to have gone down with the ship.Another 248 died from injuries, drowning or hypothermia. Glenn and Jack both died in the attack and their bodies were never found. They were only 20 years old.
