86.    US WWII Air Corps Photo Grouping - 834th Bomb Squadron - ZODIACS - Top!
Super grouping named to Alfred P. GIRARD who served in the 834th Bomb Squadron, 486th Bomb Group. The 834th BS had the distinction of having a thematic group of bombers depicting the 12 signs of the zodiac. Eventually, only 11 planes would have their artwork completed. Thus, the squad became known as the Zodiacs. The group was further distinguished by its war record, flying its first 77 missions without a loss. This set an 8th AF record. LT Shaw and crew have the distinction of being the first crew from the 834th to lose a plane. They made an emergency landing near the Belgian town of Wetteren in August of 1944.
The grouping comes with a massive amount of quality images of B-17s and B-24s in flight, on bombing runs, contrails, nose art, painted A-2 jackets in wear, base life, photos of barracks, officers, medals in wear, ceremonies, mission briefings, unit photos, crew photos, officers and more. Also comes with some rare field made unit publications including a rare victory party program with the zodiac emblem on the cover. Also comes with a folder with lots of original paperwork of the man including his discharge.
